Brothers and Sisters,

Last weekend was designated as the priesthood weekend, when the Church recognizes the importance of the vocation and the ministry of her priests. I would normally preside at all the five masses and hear confessions that weekend as many of you know, but thanks be to God, Father Patrick who visited us from New York for a mission appeal helped me with the English masses and confessions not just for the weekend but also for the weekday masses during his visit here. The timing of his visit could not have been better, since I needed help as I was asked to rest for several days after an out-patient surgery I had on Thursday afternoon that week.  

I am grateful to God for my brother priests who are available when I need their help and support. In fact I owe my vocation to other priests who have inspired me to become a priest and accompanied me during the years of formation in the seminary. I am worried when a brother priest is sick or become unavailable when needed. I feel sad when as a priest I myself cannot respond to every situation that requires my attention or presence here in the parish. 

Being a priest is challenging at times especially if you must deal with complex situations from within and without the community. Priests are asked to take to heart the call of Jesus to "feed my lamb," and to do so knowing that we are also vulnerable human beings. So as we show our appreciation for the vocation of priesthood I thank all of you for your prayers for me, your parish priest. I invite you to help me be a good priest of God by showing mercy and support when I need it most.

Hermanos y hermanas,

El fin de semana pasado fue designado como el fin de semana del sacerdocio cuando la Iglesia reconoce la importancia de la vocación y el ministerio de sus sacerdotes. Normalmente presidiría las cinco misas y escucharía confesiones ese fin de semana, como muchos de ustedes saben, gracias a Dios, el padre Patrick, que nos visitó desde Nueva York para un llamamiento misionero, me ayudó con las misas y confesiones en inglés no solo durante el fin de semana, sino también para las misas entre semana durante su visita aquí. El momento de su visita no podría haber sido la mejor, ya que necesitaba ayuda, pues me pidieron que descansara varios días después de una cirugía ambulatoria que tuve el jueves por la tarde de esa semana.

Agradezco a Dios por mis hermanos sacerdotes que están disponibles cuando necesito su ayuda y apoyo. De hecho, debo mi vocación a otros sacerdotes que me han inspirado a ser sacerdote y me han acompañado durante los años de formación en el seminario. Me preocupa que un hermano sacerdote se enferme o no esté disponible cuando sea necesario. Me siento triste cuando, como sacerdote, yo mismo no puedo responder a todas las situaciones que requieren mi atención o presencia aquí en la parroquia.

Ser sacerdote es un desafío a veces, especialmente si debe lidiar con situaciones complejas dentro y fuera de la comunidad. A los sacerdotes se les pide que tomen en serio el llamado de Jesús de "apacentar mi cordero", y que lo hagan sabiendo que también somos seres humanos vulnerables. Entonces, mientras mostramos nuestro aprecio por la vocación del sacerdocio, les agradezco a todos ustedes por sus oraciones por mí, su párroco. Te invito a que me ayudes a ser un buen sacerdote de Dios mostrando misericordia y apoyo cuando más lo necesito.

Dear Parishioners,
We are about halfway in our walk with Jesus during this Lenten season. It is time to remind ourselves again about the three things that the Church invites us to do during Lent namely prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I can't talk about your practice of prayer and fasting but what I know for sure many of you have been more generous in giving for the poor and the support of your church. God is good and generous through you. So I am grateful for that. With many more services that I need to provide during this time such as extra mass, confessions, visits with the sick and home bound, you will understand if I have to call on other priests to help. And of course they have to be given stipends for their services. Your generosity will go a long way to help with that.
Almsgiving is also expressed in different ways. As you know the governor of Texas has recently made changes in the practice of wearing masks and social distancing. While he reserves the right of businesses including churches to make their own decisions about what to do, his order can be taken by many to mean that things are back to normal, when they are not. I am pleased to see so many older parishioners come to mass these days. They are among the groups most vulnerable against Covid-19. So let us think about them as well as those with underlying health conditions when we come to mass.
At this time there are about 900 parishioners at least attending mass every weekend. I expect the number to go up in the coming weeks. So let us continue to take care of ourselves and each other

Queridos Feligreses,
Estamos a mitad de camino con Jesús durante esta temporada de cuaresma. Es hora de recordarnos de nuevo las tres cosas que la Iglesia nos invita a hacer durante la Cuaresma, esto es la Oración, el Ayuno y su Ofrenda. No puedo hablar de su práctica de oración y ayuno, pero lo que sé con seguridad muchos de ustedes han sido más generosos al dar por los pobres y el apoyo de la iglesia. Dios es bueno y generoso a través de ti. Así que estoy agradecido por eso. Con muchos más servicios que necesito proporcionar durante este tiempo, como misas extras, confesiones, visitas con enfermos y en casa, comprenderán si tengo que pedir ayuda a otros sacerdotes. Y, por supuesto, hay que dar estipendios por sus servicios. Tu generosidad ayudará mucho con eso.
Las ofrendas también se expresa de diferentes maneras. Como usted sabe, el gobernador de Texas ha hecho cambios recientemente en la práctica de usar máscaras y distanciamiento social. Si bien se reserva, el derecho de las empresas, incluidas las iglesias, de tomar sus propias decisiones sobre qué hacer, su orden puede ser tomada por muchos para significar que las cosas vuelven a la normalidad, cuando no lo están. Me complace ver a tantos feligreses mayores venir a misa estos días. Se encuentran entre los grupos más vulnerables contra Covid-19. Así que pensemos en ellos, así como en aquellos con condiciones de salud subyacentes cuando llegamos a misa.
En este momento hay alrededor de 900 feligreses al menos asistiendo a misa cada fin de semana. Espero que el número suba en las próximas semanas. Así que sigamos cuidándonos a nosotros mismos y a los demás.

Greetings.
I am back from a week of vacation in New York and other places on the North East. While I was there on June 30, 2017, I quietly remembered my ordination 21 years ago.  It also marked the completion of my 3 year assignment here at St John the Baptist Catholic Church. God has been good to me and to all of us. To Him I am forever thankful.
Shortly before I left for my vacation we had just completed the new ramp for our Church. You may have noticed also the disappearance of the white house across the street from the old rectory and the tearing down of the old storage shed that stood between the pavilion and the church office. Thanks to our facility and maintenance manager, Dennis LeCompte, these things that are part of our plan for the future have been taken care of. If everything goes as planned more activities will occur in the coming weeks and months as part of our phase 1-A plan. In the meantime there are many things happening behind the scenes such as meetings with the architect group, Building Committee members, the archdiocese officials, the city of Alvin etc.
I want us to pause now to thank God for those small things we have accomplished. This weekend after all the masses we will have a ritual of blessing for everything that we have added on to our Church: the ambry for the Sacred Oils, the new stand/location for our Tabernacle, the Divine Mercy Corner and the Church ramp.
Pledges continue to come in for our capital campaign. Right now we are at $ 1,925,636.00. This figure doesn’t include special donations and monies raised through fund-raising activities. One half million more in pledges I will be a bald-headed man.
Over 80 Parishioners have requested to make their pledge payments by credit card or bank draft.  The Parish staff is working on the data entry and has found that some cards do not have enough information to enter the deduction. When this happens, the parishioner will receive a phone call.  The deductions that have been entered with no problems will begin in August 2017 or later as indicated.  If you need to make any changes to the information provided on your pledge card or if you choose to change your method of payment, please call the Church Office at 281-331-3751.
Anyone who indicated that they would like to make their pledge payment through the OneParish app on their phone can enter their information at any time. Be sure to choose  1A-Capital Campaign-PLEDGE PAYMENT.

Saludos. 
Ya estoy de regreso después de una semana de vacaciones en New York y otros lugares en el Noroeste del país. Mientras estaba allá, en silencio recordé el día de mi ordenación hace 21 años, el 30 de Junio. Al mismo tempo, he cumplido ya mis 3 años de servicio que me fueron asignados aquí en la parroquia San Juan Bautsta. Dios ha sido bueno conmigo y con todos nosotros. A El, le estoy eternamente agradecido. 
Poco antes de salir de vacaciones, habíamos terminado la rampa de acceso de nuestra Parroquia. Quizás ya se dieron cuenta que, la casa blanca que estaba al otro lado de la calle cerca de la Rectoría, se ha desaparecido. Y que hemos quitado el viejo cuarto donde almacenábamos la maquinaria, el que estaba situado entre la cancha y la oficina parroquial. Gracias a nuestro encargado de mantenimiento, Dennis Lacompte, estas cosas que formaban parte de nuestro plan maestro, ya estan echas. Si todo continua como esta planeado en las siguientes semanas  y meses habra mas actividades como parate de la fase 1-A del plan.  Mientras tanto hay muchas cosas que están ocurriendo de las que no se dan cuenta, tales como, reuniones con los arquitectos, miembros del comité de construcción, los oficiales de la Arquidiócesis, la ciudad de Alvin, etc.
 
Quiero que hágannos una pausa ahora, para agradecer a Dios por los pequeños logros que ya hemos realizado. Este fin de semana, después de cada Misa tendremos un ritual de bendición por cada cosa que hemos añadido a nuestra Parroquia: la vitrina de los santos Oleos, el estante nuevo del Tabernáculo, la esquina de la Divina Misericordia y la rampa.
 
Promesas para la campaña capital siguen llegando. Ahora tenemos $1,925.636.00. Esta cantidad no incluye las donaciones especiales ni lo que se ha recaudado de las ventas que se han llevado a cabo. Medio millón de dólares mas y yo seré un hombre pelón.
 
Más de 80 feligreses han solicitado cumplir con su promesa con pagos por tarjeta de crédito o transferencia bancaria. El personal de la parroquia está trabajando en indroducir los datos necesarios y se ha encontrado que algunas tarjetas no tienen suficiente información para poder hacer la deducción del pago. Por consecuencia los feligreces recibirán una llamada para conseguir los datos necesarios. Las deducciones que se han introducido sin problemas comenzarán en agosto del 2017 o posterior. Si necesita realizar cambios en la información proporcionada en su carta de promesa o si decide cambiar su método de pago, por favor llame a la Oficina de la Iglesia al 281-331-3751.
 
Quienes indicaron que les gustaría hacer su promesa de pago a través del app OneParish en su teléfono puede introducir su información en cualquier momento. Asegúrese de elegir  1A-Capital Campaign-PLEDGE PAYMENT.
